Ever since their debut in 1964, the Teen Titans have been an integral part of the DC Universe. However, it wasn't until the Teen Titans TV series premiered in 2003 that Robin, Starfire, Cyborg, Raven and Beast Boy jumped into the spotlight. Audiences fell in love with the young team of heroes, and the show became a pop culture phenomenon thanks to its mature storylines and stellar characters. To fans' dismay, the show came to an end after only five seasons. Fortunately, the Titans returned to television seven years later with a brand new series called Teen Titans Go! Unlike the 2003 show, which focused on serious story arcs similar to the comics, Teen Titans Go! had a more child-friendly tone, opting to focus on short skits exploring the day-to-day lives of the Teen Titans.

So far, the show has done a great job of presenting its main group of heroes to young viewers. Still, despite its kid-friendly nature, Teen Titans Go! hasn't been afraid of exploring mature subjects. In fact, the show has made a habit out of telling surprisingly disturbing storylines throughout the years. Don't believe us? Well, let's take a look at 17 disturbing things we've been ignoring in Teen Titans Go!

17 ROBIN LETS A THIEF GET EATEN BY A DEMON

One would think that, after years of working with Batman, Robin would be an excellent driver. As we learned in season one, however, that's not the case. Realizing he could no longer depend on his friends to drive him everywhere, the Boy Wonder decided to take driving lessons and finally get his license. Unfortunately for the hero, his instructor turned out to be a thief who used him as his personal getaway driver.

At first, Robin didn't seem to realize what was happening. Surprisingly, he was in fact well aware of his instructor's shady activities. So, did Robin turn the thief over to the police? Nope. Following a daring race against his fellow Titans, Robin let his instructor get taken by a hungry demon unleashed earlier in the episode. Sure, the man was a criminal, but Batman would have probably never allowed him to suffer such a horrendous fate.

16 CYBORG'S FATHER IS A TOASTER

Cyborg's origin story is one of the most touching and heartbreaking tales in comics. To fans' dismay, Teen Titans Go! presented a much more gruesome take on the hero's backstory. During the episode 'Dog Hand,' Cyborg gave audiences a glimpse into his upbringing with the revelation that his father was actually a toaster. The sequence was played up for laughs, but it also paved the way for an extremely uncomfortable scenario.

Cyborg is half human, which would mean his mother fell in love with an inanimate toaster and somehow found the way to have a son with it. Yeah... that's probably not the kind of background a children's show should give to one of its main characters. On the bright side, the series has referenced Vic Stone's comic book origin, so his backstory as the child of an inanimate toaster is probably a thing of the past.

15 BEAST BOY WAS ABANDONED IN A ZOO AS A BABY

Beast Boy is arguably Teen Titans Go!'s most optimistic superhero. He's always willing to play video games, eat pizza and have a good time with his super-powered friends. Sadly, the lovable furry fella hasn't had the easiest life. In fact, he has one of the most disturbing backstories out of all the Titans. During the season one episode 'Dog Hand,' Beast Boy revealed that, as a baby, he wandered alone around a zoo, asking various animals whether they were his parents.

In response, the hero was thrown around various cages until he finally broke down crying. At first, the sequence may seem like a fun play on Beast Boy's animalistic nature. In reality, the scene implies the hero was abandoned as a baby. Not only that, but he was just dropped off with dangerous animals with no way to defend himself.

14 CYBORG AND BEAST BOY DESTROY A PIZZERIA

Beast Boy and Cyborg may be superheroes, but Teen Titans Go! showed they could be just as despicable as the villains they battle. In the episode 'Hey Pizza,' the heroes realized they could order a pizza and get it for free since the delivery guy wouldn't be able to get to their headquarters in less than 30 minutes. To their dismay, the food arrived in time.

Irked by the outcome, Cyborg and Beast Boy started to order more pizzas, hatching various plans to stop the delivery guy from delivering their food in a timely manner. After a slew of unsuccessful schemes, the heroes gave up and opted to simply destroy the pizzeria. While the delivery man was shown to be alive, nothing is ever said about the cooks and employees that were probably working inside the building before Beast Boy and Cyborg destroyed it.

13 ROBIN STOPS HELPING THE ELDERLY TO SEE STARFIRE IN A BIKINI

Much like Batman, Robin is constantly looking for ways to help his community. In the episode 'Hey Pizza,' the Boy Wonder set his sights on building a senior center. Shortly after announcing his plans, however, Starfire mentioned she had just bought a bikini. Eager to see Starfire in a swimsuit, Robin decided to scrap the plans to build the senior center to build a pool instead.

That's right, the show's main protagonist struggled between building a pool for his own convenience or actually lending a hand to people in need. Thankfully, the Boy Wonder came to his senses by the end of the episode and opted to build the senior center. Still, his final decision doesn't take away the fact that he was willing to drop everything just to flirt with one of his teammates.

12 ROBIN TALKS TO HIS STAFF

Robin is one of the most capable members of the Teen Titans. He may not have superpowers, but he takes advantage of his intellect and physical prowess to defend Jump City alongside his fellow Titans. Given his impressive track record as a superhero, it's easy to ignore the fact that Robin is dealing with a bizarre case of split personalities. As revealed in the episode 'Staff Meeting,' the young Titan shared a disturbingly strong bond with his staff.

He saw his trusty weapon as his best friend, and talked to it on a regular basis, even going as far as to discuss what they wanted for lunch. Seeing the Boy Wonder having a chat with his weapon of choice is, admittedly, quite funny. However, the whole thing becomes quite troubling when we consider the fact that the Boy Wonder ultimately created a whole new personality to interact with himself. Yikes.

11 BEAST BOY ABANDONS HIS FRIENDS IN BATTLE

Despite his seemingly frail exterior, Beast Boy is one of the Teen Titans' most powerful and valuable assets when it comes to defending the world. Unfortunately, the furry hero doesn't always find himself in the mood to use his abilities for the good of mankind. During the episode 'Dude Relax!,' it's revealed that Beast Boy constantly ditched his friends in battle without anyone realizing it.

He accomplished this by painting nearby animals green and throwing them in the middle of battles to make his fellow Titans think he was with them. His methods may seem clever at first, but they're actually incredibly disturbing. Beast Boy isn't only cruel to animals, but he's also willing to leave his teammates behind during potentially deadly conflicts in order relax. Those are not the kind of personality traits one would hope to see in a superhero.

10 A WOMAN TAKES UP STARFIRE'S PET AS HER LOVER

In the episode 'La Larva del Amor,' Starfire's beloved pet, Silkie, managed to escape from the Titans' tower after the young team of superheroes became distracted by their daily activities. After a long journey (that even had him crossing paths with Batman), the little guy arrived in Mexico, where he was greeted by a recently-divorced woman.

Desperate to get back at her husband, the woman took up Silkie as her new lover, and their relationship was as disturbing as it sounds. Initially, it may be easy to discard the romance as part of the show's absurd humor but in reality, though, their relationship is deeply disturbing, since it essentially boils down to a human falling in love with an animal. That's definitely not the kind of storyline one would expect to find in a Teen Titans-centric TV series.

9 RAVEN HAS CREATURES LOCKED UP IN HER ROOM

Raven is one of the Teen Titans' most powerful members, but her moral compass isn't as straight as her teammates.' Quite the contrary. Most of the time, Raven has no problem with destroying anyone who gets in her way. She also seems to have no problem with holding her enemies captive. As shown numerous times throughout the series, Raven has a series of small cages in her room holding a variety of mysterious creatures.

The fact that a superhero keeps living beings locked up in such an inhumane way is quite unnerving, but the matter goes deeper than that. The bottom cell has a skeleton arm hanging out, meaning Raven either let a creature die, or killed it herself. That's definitely not something a superhero should do, and the cells make us wonder just how far Raven is willing to go in her fight against evil.

8 JINX'S INHUMANE TREATMENT IN PRISON

Throughout the years, DC comics has established various means of keeping super-powered villains locked up. Surprisingly, Teen Titans Go! offered one of the cruelest methods yet. In the episode 'Girls' Night Out,' Starfire decided to have a fun evening with Raven. Feeling they needed a third companion, the heroes traveled to Jump City's juvenile correction facility to convince Jinx, a longtime villain of the Titans, to tag along in their adventure.

Once in the prison, viewers are offered a firsthand look at the baddie's humiliating living conditions. Not only is her cell surrounded by deadly guns pointing at her at all times, but she also has a bucket for a toilet. Jinx may be a criminal, but her treatment in prison is simply inhumane, especially considering the fact that she is, after all, just a child.

7 RAVEN ATE AN ENTIRE SOFTBALL TEAM

Raven may be a superhero, but she has committed some truly heinous acts throughout her life. One of the most disturbing ones so far has been cannibalism. During the episode 'Artful Dodgers,' Robin, Cyborg and Beast Boy signed up for a softball tournament. Raven and Starfire were left out, however. When asked about why they weren't invited, Robin revealed a deeply troubling detail from Raven's past.

As it turns out, Raven had competed in softball before, but she became upset after being hit and in a fit of rage, ate the entire opposing team. The show played up the scene as if it were a joke, glossing over the fact that one of the show's main heroes ate a number of human beings without batting an eye. As if that fact wasn't troubling enough, Raven never showed any form of regret over her actions.

6 THE TITANS KEEP A LETHAL MUTATED ANIMAL AS THEIR PET

At first glance, Starfire's beloved pet, Silkie, may seem like an inoffensive little fella. He sleeps most of the day, rarely moves around, and to top it all off, he's adorable. Unfortunately, that's all mostly a front. Throughout the course of the series, Silkie is actually shown to be a very volatile creature. In the episode 'Starliar,' for example, Starfire failed to feed Silkie in time.

Unable to satisfy his appetite, the little guy started going on a rampage all around Titans tower, consuming everyone and everything in his path. Things continued to escalate until Silkie found his way into Raven's room and devoured an enormous demonic entity. The sequence was undoubtedly fun, but it also helped illustrate how dangerous Silkie could be if he's ever set free. Hopefully, the Titans will continue to keep him in check.

5 THE TITANS ARE ALWAYS TRYING TO KILL EACH OTHER

In the comics, the Teen Titans are a family, and they're constantly supporting each other through thick and thin. However, the same thing can't be said about the Titans depicted in Teen Titans Go! One major detail that's often overlooked about the heroes' relationship in the show is that, most of the time, they're more than willing to kill each other if the occasion calls for it.

Numerous times throughout the series, the Titans have engaged in all out battles over the smallest of problems, without regards to their own safety. They just fire, punch and shoot away until they make up, or something abruptly puts an end to their conflict. Considering how dangerous superheroes can be when going off the rails, that's probably not the best behavior for the young team of crime-fighters.

4 EVERYONE TAKES ADVANTAGE OF STARFIRE

Having come from outer space, Starfire doesn't behave like the average human being. She's very formal, doesn't lie, never uses sarcasm, and is overall an extremely sweet individual. Unfortunately, over the course of three seasons, Starfire's naive personality has allowed her teammates to take advantage of her in a variety of ways. During the episode 'The Date,' for example, Robin tricked her into thinking he was Speedy to go out on a date with her.

Later on in season one, Beast Boy tricked Starfire, making her think he was a ghost, and forcing her to do his bidding. Some time after that, the furry fella taught Starfire to lie, hoping she'd take him to an exclusive superhero party. All of those instances have mostly been written off as jokes, but that kind of manipulative behavior is quite disturbing, and isn't something we'd expect from superheroes.

3 ROBIN TURNED INTO A BIRD AND ATE HIS OWN EGG

Robin is the only powerless member of the Teen Titans. In the episode 'Super Robin,' this was shown to be a great burden for the young crime-fighter, as he constantly struggled to keep up with his super-powered teammates. Frustrated to see his friends carrying out their heroic duties so easily, the Boy Wonder finally decided to give himself abilities by merging his DNA with that of a bird. The experiment went horribly wrong, and Robin turned into a bird/human hybrid.

Shortly after his transformation, the Boy Wonder laid an egg, which he immediately used to make himself an omelette. That may seem like an easy life hack, but it's just plain disgusting once you think about it -- Robin basically ate his own unborn child for breakfast. That's probably not the kind of thing audiences should think about in a children's TV show.

2 CYBORG TURNED THE TITANS INTO HUMAN APPLIANCES

Cyborg may be powerful, but every now and then, he finds himself in need of some high maintenance. During the episode 'Tower of Power,' the Titans dismantled Victor's body to clean it up. Once they were done, however, the heroes were unable to put him back together, so they plugged him into their tower's operating system. To their dismay, Cyborg became incredibly controlling once he got a hold of their headquarters.

The Titans tried to bring Cyborg down, but he got the upper hand and put them to sleep. When they woke up, the Titans discovered they had been turned into human appliances. Surprisingly, their shock quickly dissipated due to their new abilities, and everyone simply glossed over the fact that Cyborg maimed his teammates and attached their remaining body parts to inanimate objects. That's something one would expect in a horror movie, but not in Teen Titans Go!

1 THE TITANS ATE PIES MADE OUT OF PEOPLE

For some strange reason, Teen Titans Go! decided to explore a cannibalism-centric storyline with its first episode, 'Pie Bros.' In an effort to earn money for Cyborg's birthday present, Beast Boy accepted a job at Mother Eye's, the Titans' favorite pie shop. At first, the establishment seemed like a great place, as the Titans converged there to talk, discuss their daily activities and simply have a good time. Sadly, the shop hid a sinister secret.

Unbeknownst to the Titans, Mother Eye used human flesh as her pies' secret ingredient. The seemingly sweet lady hypnotized people and brought them into her kitchen, where they were then turned into food. Thankfully, the Titans eventually realized what was happening and put an end to Mother Eye's gruesome operation. Unfortunately, their victory didn't erase the fact that they ate humans disguised as desserts on a regular basis.
